The two are built on different foundations. One is a mature keyword auction extended into an AI surface. The other has no keywords at all. This guide compares match types and auction mechanics, Performance Max, Google Ads import, bidding, measurement, LinkedIn targeting, and what ads inside Copilot actually are, using each platform's own published documentation. **Key takeaways** - If you already run Microsoft Advertising, treat ads in Copilot as an extension of your existing campaigns, not a new campaign type to build. - Nothing about Microsoft's match types or Quality Score carries over to ChatGPT ads: write context hints as sentences, not keywords, and expect no quality diagnostic. - Google Ads import saves setup time on Microsoft Advertising; there is no equivalent import path into ChatGPT ads, so campaigns have to be rebuilt from a feed and a hint set. - Track conversions with UET on Microsoft Advertising and the pixel or Conversions API on ChatGPT ads; neither platform reads the other's tag. - Budget for both if your customers already search on Bing and also spend time in ChatGPT: the two buying mechanics do not overlap enough to treat one as a substitute for the other. ### How does targeting differ: keywords and match types versus context hints? Microsoft Advertising targets keywords with three match types: broad, which reaches related searches including synonyms and misspellings; phrase, which requires the words of your keyword, or close variants, to appear in the query; and exact, which requires the closest match and takes precedence over broad or phrase when more than one keyword could trigger the same query. ChatGPT ads has no keywords or match types at all. An ad group carries up to 2,000 free-text context hints, matched to a conversation by meaning, with no bid per hint and no query or prompt-level report. Auction position on Microsoft Advertising is driven by bid amount, ad relevance and ad performance such as clickthrough rate, with a minimum performance bar for the top mainline positions. Quality Score, the 1 to 10 diagnostic covering expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, is explicitly not part of that calculation: Microsoft states it does not affect cost or spend. ChatGPT ads has no published relevance or quality score at all; every ad is reviewed and approved or rejected with a reason before it can serve, and editing a creative sends it back to review. The [guide on context hints](https://adsonomy.com/guides/contextual-targeting-and-context-hints-in-chatgpt-ads) covers how to write them and structure ad groups so results can actually be measured. ### What is Performance Max on Microsoft Advertising, and does ChatGPT ads have an equivalent? Performance Max on Microsoft Advertising is, in Microsoft's own words, currently available in open beta worldwide: it builds asset groups, up to 100 per campaign, bids to Maximize Conversion Value with Target ROAS or Maximize Conversions with Target CPA, and pulls Shopping inventory from a Merchant Center feed, with Audience Groups used only as bidding signals rather than hard targeting. ChatGPT ads has no comparable single automated campaign type. The closest equivalent is a product ad built from an uploaded feed inside an otherwise manually built campaign, with no target ROAS or target CPA bid strategy available at all. No official Microsoft source compares Performance Max structurally to Google's own Performance Max, so that comparison is left out here rather than guessed at. On the ChatGPT side, a feed ad group can carry only one live product ad template at a time, and there is no asset-group concept combining multiple creative types into one automatically assembled campaign. Because Performance Max on Microsoft Advertising draws on a Merchant Center feed, the mechanics of feed data and how OpenAI's own feed schema differs are covered in [OpenAI product feeds versus Google Merchant Center feeds](https://adsonomy.com/guides/openai-product-feed-vs-google-merchant-center). ### Can you import Google Ads campaigns into either platform? Yes on Microsoft Advertising, no on ChatGPT ads. Microsoft's Google Ads import brings across campaigns, ad groups, ads, keywords, bid adjustments, location targets and keyword themes in one pass; bid strategies convert to Maximize Clicks on import, budgets and bids below Microsoft's currency minimums are raised automatically, and unsupported location targets map to the nearest supported parent or are dropped if none exists. ChatGPT ads has no import feature from Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising or anywhere else: every campaign, ad group and ad is created from scratch through the Ads Manager or the Ads API. One import detail worth knowing before you rely on it: a scheduled re-import on Microsoft Advertising, run with "update existing items" turned on, will silently overwrite manual changes made afterwards inside Microsoft Advertising itself. There is no equivalent risk on the ChatGPT side simply because there is nothing to re-import; a feed-based catalogue can be reused as a starting point for product ads, but the context hints, creative and account structure still have to be built by hand or through the API. ### How do the bidding strategies compare? Both platforms bid automatically toward an outcome, but the vocabulary differs. Microsoft Advertising offers Maximize Clicks, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value and Enhanced CPC; standalone Target CPA and Target ROAS were folded into the Maximize strategies as of 4 August 2025, though existing standalone campaigns are grandfathered. ChatGPT ads bids on impressions, clicks or conversions, with a strategy of fixed bid, maximise clicks or maximise conversions, and no target CPA or target ROAS field on the campaign at all. Conversion campaigns billed per impression, generally available on ChatGPT ads since 16 September 2026, are OpenAI's own recommended default for maximising performance. Money on ChatGPT ads is expressed in micros, one millionth of a currency unit, and an impression bid is per impression rather than per thousand; there are no bid caps on the maximise strategies. Microsoft Advertising bids in standard account currency throughout. The [guide on budgets and bidding](https://adsonomy.com/guides/budgets-pacing-and-bidding-strategies-for-chatgpt-ads) covers the ChatGPT side's units and account-level limits in full. ### How is conversion tracking set up: UET versus the ChatGPT pixel and Conversions API? Microsoft Advertising uses a single site-wide Universal Event Tracking (UET) tag that powers multiple conversion goals and remarketing lists, and is required for most automated bid strategies unless you are using an Offline Conversion goal. ChatGPT ads uses a JavaScript pixel plus a server-side Conversions API: personal data sent to the Conversions API is hashed with SHA-256, events are deduplicated by an event ID, and only fourteen standard events, such as order_created or lead_created, can be set as an optimisation goal. Attribution windows are handled differently too. On ChatGPT ads, the click window is set per conversion event as attribution_window_days, with no default stated in the documentation, and view-through conversions use a fixed one-day window when available for the account, reported separately from clicks; Ads Manager has offered 7, 14 or 30-day click windows and a 0 or 1-day view window since 16 September 2026. Whichever platform you track on, a UET tag does not feed ChatGPT ads reporting and the ChatGPT pixel does not feed Microsoft Advertising, so both need their own tag on a shared landing page. ### Does LinkedIn profile targeting have a ChatGPT ads equivalent? No. Microsoft Advertising's LinkedIn profile targeting lets you adjust bids by company, industry or job function, for up to 1,000 companies per ad group or campaign, available on Search, Dynamic Search Ads and Shopping and rolling out to Performance Max; it works as a bid signal, not a hard filter. ChatGPT ads has no comparable professional-network attribute at all. Targeting on ChatGPT ads is limited to locations, platforms and, outside the EEA and Switzerland, optional custom audiences built from your own uploaded customer lists of emails, phone numbers or Android advertising IDs. A B2B advertiser used to LinkedIn profile targeting on Microsoft Advertising has to reach the same job titles and company types through context hints and creative rather than a targeting field, and cannot use custom audiences at all for campaigns targeting the EEA or Switzerland. ### What are ads in Microsoft Copilot, and what is the Showroom ads pilot and AI Max for Search? Ads in Microsoft Copilot are not a separate ad type. Microsoft's own documentation confirms they are existing formats made eligible to appear in or alongside Copilot's responses: Multimedia ads, Product ads drawn from Shopping or Performance Max, Search ads with a logo extension, and two Vertical formats for property promotion and for tours and activities. Every eligible campaign or ad is opted in automatically, advertisers cannot opt out, there is no Copilot-specific targeting or bidding mechanic, and Microsoft states plainly that it does not currently support specific metrics for ads served in Copilot. Two named features go further. Showroom ads, a split-screen immersive brand unit inside Copilot, is explicitly a pilot limited to the United States and select clients, with wider rollout only described as planned. AI Max for Search, a Search-campaign feature that expands matching and generates AI text variants, moved from an open pilot to general availability for all advertisers, serving across Copilot Search, Copilot Answers and Bing; it remains a feature of the existing Search campaign type rather than a new object. On the ChatGPT side, there is no equivalent surface split to describe: ads run inside ChatGPT itself, OpenAI states publicly that "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you," and results are reported per ad group and per ad, with no query or prompt-level report on either platform's newest AI surface. ### Which platform should you choose, and should you run both? Choose based on where your buyers already are. Microsoft Advertising is the better choice if you need keyword-precise control, Performance Max's automated Shopping reach, or a fast migration of an existing Google Ads account. ChatGPT ads is the better choice for an advice-stage conversation, where someone is still describing a need in their own words rather than typing a search term. Most catalogue and service businesses that already buy search should treat the two as complementary rather than either-or, since they reach the same customer at different moments and neither can be imported into the other. Adsonomy runs the ChatGPT side of that split: it builds ad groups, context hints and product ads from your feed within the guardrails and policy you set. It does not manage Microsoft Advertising campaigns; it is launching 1 October 2026. Comparison: Microsoft Advertising versus ChatGPT ads. - Targeting unit: keywords with broad, phrase and exact match (Microsoft Advertising) versus context hints, up to 2,000 per ad group, matched by meaning (ChatGPT ads). - Quality diagnostic: Quality Score, 1 to 10, does not affect cost or spend (Microsoft Advertising) versus no quality or relevance score in the API (ChatGPT ads). - Automated feed campaign: Performance Max, open beta, Merchant Center feed (Microsoft Advertising) versus product ads inside a manually built campaign, from an uploaded feed (ChatGPT ads). - Import from Google Ads: yes, campaigns, ad groups, keywords, bid adjustments (Microsoft Advertising) versus no import feature from any platform (ChatGPT ads). - Automated bidding: Maximize Clicks, Conversions or Conversion Value; Target CPA and ROAS folded in since August 2025 (Microsoft Advertising) versus fixed bid, maximise clicks or maximise conversions; no target CPA or ROAS field (ChatGPT ads). - Conversion tracking: Universal Event Tracking (UET), one site-wide tag (Microsoft Advertising) versus pixel plus server-side Conversions API, SHA-256 hashed (ChatGPT ads). - Professional targeting: LinkedIn profile targeting by company, industry, job function (Microsoft Advertising) versus no equivalent, only custom audiences from uploaded lists (ChatGPT ads). - Ads in the AI assistant: existing ad types made eligible in Copilot, auto opted in, no Copilot-specific metrics (Microsoft Advertising) versus ads run inside ChatGPT itself, reported per ad group and per ad (ChatGPT ads). ## Frequently asked questions Q: Does Microsoft Advertising's Quality Score affect my bid or cost? A: No. Microsoft states Quality Score is a 1 to 10 diagnostic covering expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, and that it does not affect cost or spend. Ad Rank and position are driven separately by bid amount, ad relevance and ad performance. Q: Is Performance Max mandatory on Microsoft Advertising? A: No. Performance Max is Microsoft's own automated campaign type, currently available in open beta worldwide, but standard Search, Shopping and Audience campaigns remain available and are not being replaced by it. Q: Can I get ChatGPT ads to match a query exactly, the way exact match does on Microsoft Advertising? A: No. ChatGPT ads has no keywords or match types at all. An ad group carries up to 2,000 free-text context hints that the platform matches to a conversation by meaning, with a single bid for the ad group and no per-hint control. Q: Do ads shown inside Microsoft Copilot need a separate campaign type? A: No. Existing eligible ad types, such as Multimedia ads, Product ads and Search ads with a logo extension, are automatically made eligible to appear in Copilot. There is no separate Copilot campaign object, and advertisers cannot opt out of eligible placements. Q: Can I use LinkedIn profile targeting inside a ChatGPT ads campaign? A: No. LinkedIn profile targeting is a Microsoft Advertising feature. ChatGPT ads targets only locations, platforms and, outside the EEA and Switzerland, custom audiences built from your own uploaded customer lists.
